We in the Binghamton/Oneonta Districts are...
"Making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world by... living the gospel of Jesus Christ and to be God's love with our neighbors in all places."
“The Word became flesh and lived among us” (John 1:14)
Dear siblings in Christ,
Greetings in the name and with the love of our Savior and Friend, Jesus Christ, this Advent.
I invite you to watch and share this year’s Episcopal Advent Message video. Advent marks the beginning of the Christian year and centers us on hope—remembering Christ’s birth, awaiting his return, and recognizing his presence among us today.
In this message, I reflect on how Advent proclaims God’s empathy and compassion made flesh in Jesus Christ, and how empathy shapes our discipleship, our leadership, and our witness in the world.
Please take a few moments to view the video, and I encourage you to share it with your family, friends, and congregations as we prepare our hearts for Christ’s coming. May it inspire us all to embody God’s love with empathy and compassion in our communities.
Thank you for the many ways you make the love of Jesus Christ visible and tangible. May you have a blessed Advent, a joy-filled Christmas, and a hopeful New Year.
Click here to watch the video and read a transcription of the message.
Peace of God be with you,
Bishop Héctor A. Burgos Núñez

Updated list of Feeding Ministries Available
In response to last week’s call, many United Methodist churches across Upper New York have shared information about their food pantries and community meal programs—thank you! As the government shutdown continues to create food insecurity in communities across the state and nation, the Missional Excellence Team is actively compiling and updating this list. The public directory will help connect those in need with nearby United Methodist food ministries and available resources.
Use the links below to access the three lists of feeding ministries:
If your church hosts a food pantry or feeding ministry, and they are not listed in the link above, let us know. Also, make sure your pantry information is up to date with your local 211 system, where families often turn for food assistance. A representative from your church should contact your regional 211 office to update this information. If you’re unsure how to do so, email Kristina Clark at[email protected] for guidance.
If a committee chair position, or their contact information has changed this information needs to be updated, please
e-mail the district office at [email protected] to update this information.

Introducing Portico
We’re excited to announce the launch of UNY Portico, a brand-new online resource platform created to support Upper New York congregational leaders. UNY Portico will be regularly updated with new videos, training materials, and other tools to equip you in your ministry. It joins Amplify Media (on-demand faith-based content) and MissionInsite (community demographic insights) to complete your trio of digital ministry resources.
Watch Church Chat, the place where we chat about all things Finance, Benefits, and Human Resources. Church Chat is a new original video resource series for United Methodists of Upper New York. It was created specifically for clergy and congregational leaders in Upper New York, and each episode offers practical guidance and timely updates on topics like finance, human resources, and benefits—helping you stay informed and supported in your ministry.
Church Chat episode focuses on the shift toCompass
As the Conference transitions to Compass, a new account-based defined contribution retirement plan, many questions have surfaced. In this latest episode of Church Chat—the place where we talk about all things Human Resources, Benefits, and Finance—Conference Treasurer Bob Flask sits down with Conference Benefits Officer Julie Valeski to explain the reasons behind the shift to Compass—and how this change will benefit you.

Register for Saving Grace: A Guide to Financial Well-Being
Ready to take control of your finances—and strengthen your faith along the way? Join the next Saving Grace: A Guide to Financial Well-Being training.
Rooted in Wesleyan and Biblical principles, Saving Grace is a six-session journey toward faithful financial living. You’ll learn to balance earning, saving, giving, spending, and managing debt with greater purpose and peace.
I wanted to write about some resources that are the United Methodist Upper New York Conference’s website (unyumc.org). There are two additional videos under the Church Chat section of the conference website: one on Finance and one on Stewardship. Each is about half an hour.
I think, as we have just finished our church’s Charge Conference or just finishing it up, that there are new people joining your finance committee or there’s a new Finance chair, or a new Treasurer, bookkeeper or Financial Secretary, now is the time to become more informed.
Some of this stuff can be difficult to understand, particularly for new people. I encourage a couple of things for your new folks (and even your current people):
1. Print the pdf (or buy a booklet) of the Finance and Stewardship Guidelines. The
information is informative, and the new guidelines are out for the 2020/2024
Book of Discipline.
2. Encourage your folks to watch the Finance and Stewardship Leadership Videos
under the Church Chat section of the Conference website.
3. There are also several very short (3 – 5 minute) videos on several topics, i.e. W-2s,
1099s, UMPIP withholding, etc.
If you have specific questions that aren’t answered in the videos, or the Guidelines, please feel free to contact me.
